World Go Round

Gap pants, H&M belt and wedges, Rebecca Minkoff bag, Zara top, necklace c/o Blackbird

Oddly enough, before writing this "No Doubt's Top 10 Style Moments" feature, I was already paying homage to my childhood hero Gwen Stefani when I shot this little midriff-flashing outfit for FASHION's Style Panel on Sunday. Our task this week was to show how to style treated/printed denim or how to give pre-existing denim a fresh update (I picked the latter), but I like to think now that it all happened so that I could give a nod to my 11-year-old self, the obnoxiously loud girl who was quite literally obsessed with Gwen Stefani and played Tragic Kingdom maybe five gazillion times. The trend (not that I was really aware of "trends" back then) that I stole most from her back then were crop tops - I had a whole collection. Don't know why my parents let me wear them but they're '90s-tastic in the very best way and since they're having a bit of a resurgence right now, I'm going to go ahead and embrace them once again.

I can't believe it's Wednesday let alone July 18 now! This summer is going to be all gone before I know it and I won't have gotten to all the things that were on my bucket list (go to the amateur gay strip bar near us, S.U.P. in Lake Ontario, go to Niagara Falls). Is anyone else having this time-on-fast-forward problem right now too?

Happy hump day everyone :)

  1. Hello, hint of skin! I love showing a bit of stomach while keeping most of my other parts covered. Then it doesn't look slutty. Unless I want to look slutty, and then I go alllll out.

  5. I love Gwen Stefani. I remember as a kid doing gymnastics and listening to "I'm Just a Girl." Our YMCA would just play the radio during the class and that song was the hit that year. Anyway Tragic Kingdom is just one of those cds that I always go back and listen to. It never gets old. Anyway great look. Loving the showing of a bit of skin and your color blocking!

  21. Oh, the crop top :) They were strictly banned in my house, to the point that I'm now way too self-conscious to experiment with this second go around of the style. I think you wear it really well, though - not just anyone can make a bare midriff look classy, but you've definitely pulled it off. Loving this mix of bold shades, too. So very you. Miss you, pally!

  36. haha I was so obsessed with tragic kingdom as well! Hope their new album is good. It's cool how trends are recycled, but also reimagined, like crop tops. The version now is so much classier than before.

  37. I didn't know some of these things about Gwen Stefani--especially the braces part! I was surprised about that part, haha. The crop top looks great on you, especially with the color blocking going on too. Ahh, I'm sad summer is almost over :(, I haven't gotten to a ton of things on my bucket list too, but there's still time to get some crossed off! Best of luck :)

  40. Great post on Gwen's style! I was such a fangirl too in HS. I had pink plaid pants and the bra straps showing through a white beater tank, plus pigtails all to copy her look. Do you remember when No Doubt played at MuchMusic? She wore this mini black cardigan that had an Anaheim patch on the back. Well I went and got my nanna to knit me a replica of her cardi, which I still have today, and I put my own patch (it said Zero - ode to the smashing pumpkins) on the back.

Really loving your bias cut top for just a touch of that navel peek.

  41. yes! summer has literally flown by, I hate it haha. I love how you color blocked this look, and the mid drift top def has a little bit of a no doubt vibe, but your missing the visible thong haha.
