Underneath it All

Twenty8Twelve leather jacket, Club Monaco mittens & scarf, sweater c/o Jacob,
vintage bag, dress c/o Foster Bay, H&M shirt, earrings c/o KV BIJOU, booties c/o ECCO Shoes

This week's FASHION Magazine Style Panel challenge was all about layering, which luckily for me, is my mainstay right around the time October rolls in. As someone who's perpetually freezing, having many thin layers to pile on or strip off (once inside, obviously) is the key to my winter survival. Yes, winter survival...even in mild Vancouver, the cold nearly kills me every year.

Two things to keep in mind with layering: 1. layer on thin or lightweight materials (think cashmere, soft cotton, etc.) - it will keep the look from getting bulky, and 2. think outside the box - rather than just layering your tops, think about how you can layer in unexpected ways or places. Try layering the collar of a thin blazer over a thick tweed blazer, looping together a few scarves to make one super circle scarf or pulling grandpa-esque wooly ankle socks over merino wool tights. That's the beauty of fall: not only do these layering tricks work wonders in the heat-insulation department, but the chilly weather also gives you tons of new platforms to add interest and unique styling to your look.

As evidenced in an earlier post this week, I've been into cooler tones much more than usual this fall - usually I'm all about the warm roses and caramels around autumn, but I've been really into mint and other green- or blue-tones as of late. The mint-black-white combo of this outfit acted as a perfect backdrop to one of my most recent blue-green acquisitions: these stunning chrysocolla earrings from KV BIJOU! Love that they're pieces that can definitely work year-round.

Happy Wednesday everyone!

  6. I love the knits with the delicate skirt. It's hard to dress for the cold. Especially if you have to walk everywhere.

  7. Love this icy color palette on you and your tips for layering. I live in upstate NY where we get 100 inches of snowfall each year, so I am constantly piling on different pieces to stay warm and it's always a challenge to do it while still looking chic! :)

  11. Pretty pretty. I love your fingerless glove. I used to just die during Vancouver winters. Funny how now I would give anything to live in a place that mild. Sigh.

  12. We're both wearing mint skirts in our most recent posts. Twinsies! hahaha. Lovin' this midi length on you, Alex.. and of course I love all the layers of the look, too. It's still quite warm here on Maui, but I can't wait till the temps drop just a little, so that I won't have to sport a sweatstache anymore. LOL!
