Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

I was inspired by my lovely friend Jen of her waise choice for this post. She is a master restyler, taking a single piece and making it look entirely new with every different outfit (be sure to check out her Facebook album where you can browse all her restyling masterpieces). As someone who has either been an intern or a student for God knows how long now, I obviously am not rolling in cash and only have a finite amount of money to spend on new clothes. As such, I’ve taught myself to become a bit stricter with my shopping habits, only investing in pieces I really, really love and know I’ll be able to wear again and again. So without further ado, here are some of my personal favourite pieces that I have restyled again and again!

Club Monaco lace skirt

I am beyond in love with this skirt. Even though it’s not technically “basic”, I can always think of a new way to wear it and have found it’s been just as amazing in the winter as it was in the summer. Its cream tone also makes it so easy to pair with other colours, and the scalloped lace texture makes it special enough to stand alone with simple styling.

Twenty8Twelve leather jacket

I have a bit of a beautiful love story with this leather jacket. I found it at Holt Renfrew during one of their big sales, and initially wasn’t quite sold on it just from seeing it on the hanger. Then the staff told me it was the last one and consequently the price had been even further reduced that day. Thinking that I might as well try it on, I slipped into it and then, to my surprise, immediately felt at home. I find it’s the perfect shade of grey, one that’s easy enough to pair with both cool and warm tones, and it’s literally the softest leather I’ve ever felt. The little details like the criss-crossed double zipper and cut-away lapels make it a great statement piece on its own, though I’ve become so dependent on it that I usually just use it as a staple piece. Worth every penny.

Club Monaco leopard clutch

This one was a no-brainer…you just need a great leopard piece in your closet. When I spotted this beautiful clutch in Club Monaco, I knew I had to have it – it was the perfect shape, the perfect print, and the perfect colour combination. I’ve used it so much that it’s literally paid for itself in terms of a cost to wear ratio (which is the system I use to rationalize and justify all my purchases). If you don’t own a great leopard accessory, put it right at the top of your list! So timeless and glamorous.

On another note, a few girls I know put together this stunning video shoot. I’m loving that they’re fully dressed in both Aritzia and vintage pieces. Such a great way of showing how you can mix the old with the new to great effect. Be sure to check out my girlfriend Jenny’s tumblr where you can see the video’s details!

Hope you all have a wonderful weekend lovelies!

Love how you put this post together Alex! You are so great at remixing and I'm especially amazed at how many different ways you've styled that lace skirt. I loved it but shied away from it because I didn't think I'd get that much wear out of it. You are clearly proving me wrong! The video is so beautifully done! That cream blouse with the black birds that one of the girls is wearing is SO gorgeous – do you know if that's an Aritzia piece? I want it!

    Have a great weekend lovely!

Not sure if Jen will see this comment, but the bird blouse is indeed from Aritzia. They have a dress version too that's black!

Anyway, love all your remixes Alex! I especially love how versatile that cream lace skirt it… I totally want one now.

I definitely think that being able to re-style a piece is essential for everyone, but bloggers especially! It truly shows that you have style if you can re-work a piece over and again without making it feel like you are wearing the same thing because the piece looks so different each way you style it…and you have this talent Alex! Love that leather jacket, such a great find!
    Happy Weekend!

I know exactly where you're coming from, pally. I'm on a serious budget these days due to some unforeseen circumstances and so I've been plotting out all of my outfit meticulously to find new ways to wear old things. Seeing this post – and all the beautiful ways you've worn that lace skirt, which I adore – has me inspired to take (yet) another look in my closet to find ways to do more with less 🙂

Hope you're having a wonderful weekend so far!

I love love love this post. It's so inspiring to see the way you style each piece in so many ways. I love it. Sometimes I worry that my outfits get boring because I wear the same piece over and over again, but I think it's an important part of being creative. And the video is beautiful.

A fabulous post Alexandra! I love your different styling options for each item. Your approach to purchasing a new item is right up my alley-I can justify the cost of an expensive item if I get a lot of wear out of it!

Happy weekend, love. xo veronika

This is an awesome post! I really try to refine the things that I buy and wear to be sure that they are all something that I will want to wear and wear again. This is definitely inspiration to keep going! (I'm a poor college student, too)

I'm definitely going to keep scrolling through your posts, they are very good!

I love the idea of this! The majority of my wardrobe is vintage pieces so I feel like I'm always doing this. Seems to me you pick your pieces wisely, the scalloped club skirt is my favourite.

I'm sorry I never mentioned anything about Vancouver, but I was literally there for about a day after all my travelling was done. I'm sure I will be coming back for another visit soon and I will definitely let you know!

I think its so awesome that you've done this! It makes me feel less bad for putting the same pieces over and over into my looks. Its so true, when you're in college you definitely cannot buy new clothes all the time so being able to rework pieces into different outfits is key. I love that lace skirt and leather jacket!

  22. 1.15.12

That skirt's position as favourite is well justified, it's gorgeous. Sadly, ruffles don't work on my lower half. I also adore the blazer at the end with the chunky brown belt, more style ideas to file away for future reference!

That's my goal this year! Thanks for sharing your remixes and thank you also for your nice comment on my blog the other day. xo

The outfits are so adorable. You're right, in fashion you need some creativity and put some passion on doing it. There's no harm in recycling your outfits as long as you're comfortable wearing it. We can also recycle clothes not just only plastic bags, magazines or anything that you would find useful.
