Faux Pas on Faux Pas

Club Monaco blazer & clutch, H&M top & skirt, necklace c/o Jeweliq
This outfit is a veritable smorgasbord of faux pas‘s: from the navy and black duo to the longer blazer and flared skirt combo, I really just nailed fashion don’t after fashion don’t here. But here’s my justification: a. I’ve never understood the navy-and-black faux pas (and Yves Saint Laurent put his stamp of approval on the combo years ago, so there you have it), b. I actually like the trapeze-esque silhouette that the silk blazer draped over the flared skirt creates and finally, c. though I’m not a crazy “out there” dresser, I think discretely breaking rules to give little udpates to a basic look (like I did here) is a pretty safe way of eeever so slightly adding some edginess to a stale ensemble.
This Jeweliq necklace is another example of discrete edginess: on its own, its tame but still statement-worthy, but when layered with other jewellery or thrown into a more complex look, it can really up the ante too. Once it gets just a bit cooler, I’ll be layering it under collared-shirt-and-sweater combos like crazy.
In other less fashion-related news, I’m still on the job hunt but am still feeling pretty hopeful and good about everything. I have faith that the right thing will come into place soon and in the meantime, I’m just plugging away at the application process and following up here and there at a few prospects that really appeal to me. And looking on the bright side, this has been a great period for a lot of little catch-up duties: my desktop, phone, etc. are all finally tidied/organized, I have some exciting blog-related opportunities that have opened up and I have all the time in the world to work out so I think that’s really buoyed my spirits too. It looks like the sunshine has finally let up just in time for the autumnal equinox on the weekend, so I’m happy I had that time to really soak up all the rays while they were shining (these pics aren’t doing it justice but my tan is pretty much back in full force).
The winner of the Keltie Leanne Designs giveaway is Natalie by the way, she came up with the wonderful name of “Restore” as a tribute to the healing properties of the necklace’s gemstones!
Hope you all had a great weekend!

I never understood why black and navy weren't allowed to mingle and this post just confirms my suspicion: one day, someone who hated one of the colours decided they couldn't be combined and made everyone think they didn't go together. But they actually do!

I never understood the navy and black thing either, I like the way you combined the two shades. And long blazers and flared skirts create an awesome look! Good luck in the job hunt, you will find something!

I'm really glad to hear that you're feeling positive about things – trust me (having just come through a similar situation myself), it really does all work out. And, on the fashion end of things, I am a big fan of this look. I'm breaking the black and navy rule right now myself so I have zero complaints with this.

I believe that, like rules, faux pas are made to be broken. Who says we can't do this and that? If we rock the look, then it's okay! And you, girl, certainly rock this look.

I don't know who made up the rules but I'm glad you broke them. Your outfit looks great, the colors and cuts look well together. Who ever said black and navy don't go together was color blind or something because the combination looks amazing.

  28. 9.24.12

Cute outfit. I love black and navy together, and I always invoke the name of Yves Saint Laurent as my excuse to wear it even though I totally would still love black with navy even if it didn't have a designer's stamp of approval.
