My main beach read this summer has hands down been The Happiness Advantage by Harvard psychologist Shawn Achor. After seeing Shawn’s amazing TED talk (you need to watch it), I knew this book would be a must-read for me because of its philosophy and what it means to me.
I have a BA in psychology, but my obsession with happiness and motivational psychology stems from way more than my education. I used to just really struggle emotionally as a kid and teen for whatever reason but because of a particularly poignant passage in John Steinbeck’s East of Eden that I came across when I was about 17, I somehow managed to flip a switch and recognize that I had the choice to overcome darker moments or natural pulls toward sadness to be consistently happy…and that’s what I did! Happy to say I’ve learned so much since then, and it’s definitely a passion that informed my degree choice in university.
Shawn’s book is all about making these choices and fostering happiness from within, rather than waiting for life to line up perfectly for you and “make” you happy. Though it explores how happiness affects work performance in many parts, it really applies to all areas of life. I won’t get into all the details because he does such an incredible job of laying out all these psych concepts and findings in an engaging and dynamic way, but do yourself a favour and read it – such a great read so far! Whether you’re in need of some major changes or just need to bolster your already rosy outlook on life, it will definitely delight the psych nerd in us all (or is that just me?).
Is it also a complete coincidence that it just perfectly matches one of my favourite new suits from O’Neill? I think not. I’ve been loving this persimmon orange this year and the print is beyond adorable.
What are your beach reads so far this summer? All I have lined up over the next few weekends is some serious beach time so I need your suggestions!
